Los Angeles - Gap Fixing Options

What Are My Options for Fixing a Gap in My Teeth?

When determining the solutions for a gap tooth, or diastema, two main options are Invisalign or porcelain veneers. Classic braces are almost immediately ruled out because the process is lengthy and they are painful and unattractive. Comparing our two main viable options is important before making the decision of how to fix gap teeth.

Invisalign, similar to standard braces, works to slowly rearrange the teeth. The process uses a custom shaped tooth aligner, which is worn over the teeth to move them into the intended place. The aligner is made out of medical grade clear plastic, which makes it nearly invisible on the teeth. Also, unlike standard braces, they are removable.

The process of getting Invisalign is fairly simple. A dentist will discuss the situation, and determine what plan of action is most desired. 3D images of the teeth are rendered from pictures, and molds of the teeth are taken,  to give the dentist a clear image of the process. They will then order the first set of custom fitted aligners.

During the process, there will be approximately 20-30 aligners that will be used. This process will take as little as a year to complete. Invisalign may not be covered at all by insurance, and can cost from $3,500 to the national average of $5,000. However, dentists may be able to offer convenient payment plans for qualifying patients.

In contrast to this lengthy process, veneers, also known as instant orthodontics, offer a fast solution to fix gap teeth. Veneers are pretty much an ultra-thin synthetic tooth enamel that will allow the tooth to become any desired shape, size, or color. They can be used by a dentist to fix gap teeth in as little as two visits.

The process includes taking impressions of the teeth to determine the shape and size of the veneer needed. Next, the enamel will be shaved down to prepare for the veneer. Depending on the thickness of the veneer chosen, this step might be unnecessary. Once the veneer is ready, it is bonded to the tooth with dental cement. The process can cost from $500-1300 a tooth, which may not include examination costs.

When compared to Invisalign, the time and money saved through veneers may be worth it. If a dentist is fixing a gap tooth, there may only be two veneers needed to complete the process. Invisalign is a lengthier process that works with all the teeth, not just the problem teeth. However, the benefit to this will be retaining the natural teeth. Discuss with a cosmetic dentist like Dr. Eddie Siman of Millennium Dental in Los Angeles, California to see what method works best for you.
